Winter fountains

April 29, 2025

Water fountains are a fantastic asset to any pond or lake and during the winter. They bring added benefits as they improve water quality. This makes winter fountains a great product to install in the Autumn in time for the big winter freeze.

Choice of display patterns and beautiful lighting for winter fountains

The wonderful display patterns and the unique lighting options make these a desirable addition to any water body. In the winter months, they also help to support water management in your lake or pond by keeping the water on the surface moving. This in turn stops freezing and allows oxygen to be dissolved into the water body. Many ponds and lakes freeze during the winter months. This can lead to a reduction in oxygen, fish stock dying and a breakdown of the ecological balance in the lake/pond.

Water fountains in winter provide essential surface aeration

It is important to have surface aeration in place throughout the winter to keep your waterbody healthy and ecologically balanced. During the winter season the ice cover forms on the surface of a waterbody which causes inverse stratification. Inverse or winter stratification (layering) occurs when the surface water cools, becoming denser and sinking to the bottom. When the temperature drops below 4°C the surface water cools even more becoming less dense and “floating” on top of the denser water. The floating ice layer sits at the waterbody surface and the warmer water, usually above 4°C stays on the bed of the pond, lake, or reservoir.

Winter stratification remains in place because the ice cover prevents wind from mixing the water. So surface aeration from a winter fountain keeps winter water moving. This prevents winter stratification therefore keeping your pond or lake ecologically balanced.

A winter fountain also provides a wonderful focal point to any winter garden landscape, fishery, golf course, holiday park or business park.
