So, what is diffused lake aeration?
A diffused aerator pumps air through the diffuser membranes, which then travels to the surface in the form of millions of tiny bubbles. When these bubbles travel up through the thermal layers they entrain the colder water and this is then carried to the surface layer, where it becomes naturally oxygenated. This colder water circulates and is replaced by warmer water providing complete circulation and balanced temperature.
Circulating and aerating from the base upwards also releases toxic gases that normally become trapped underneath the thermocline layer. This provides a balanced habitat for aquatic life. This aeration process creates aerobic conditions near the water bed and then the microbial process can naturally break down nutrients that might otherwise be used in the production of noxious aquatic weeds and algae.
Heathland Group can provide a variety of diffused air aerators for lakes. We offer diffused lake aeration from both tube or disc-style diffuser membranes, so we have aerators to suit everyone. Disc-style diffuser membranes entrain water from the top of the membrane up through the water column. Tube-style diffuser membranes entrain water from 360° around the tube. This allows them to reach deeper water which helps aerate the lake bed and promote sediment and silt digestion.
During the summer most lakes tend to suffer from thermal stratification, a process by which the lake water develops layers. On the bottom of the lake, you’ll have cooler, oxygen-depleted water. This is separated from the warmer oxygen-rich water on the surface of the lake by a layer called the thermocline. The differences in water density at the thermocline mean that the top layer and the bottom layer are prevented from mixing. This causes harmful gasses to become trapped and oxygen levels to deplete.
When you incorporate diffused lake aeration from the lake bed, the trapped toxic gasses that became trapped are pushed through the thermocline. They are then able to escape, helping to provide a balanced habitat in your lake. The aeration also creates aerobic conditions near the lake bed, where microbial processes can naturally break down nutrients that might otherwise be used in the production of noxious aquatic weeds and algae. During this process, the diffused aeration also circulates the entire water body. It does this by pushing the lower water column to the surface, as this process takes place surface water is drawn down.

All of our floating lake aerators come complete with 3 years parts (non-wear) warranty and 3 years return to base labour warranty. They all have high-end drives. These use environmentally safe oil-filled motors that extend the life of the aerator well beyond the normal limits. It’s not uncommon for one of these aerators to run for 10 years or more, when professionally installed and well-maintained.
The debris screens on our aerators are larger than average. This creates a larger suction surface area to reduce flow rates through the screen and greatly reduce blockages. Many of the cheaper floating aerators still use traditional pumps to transfer water. As a result, This means easily blocked narrow chambers and fine grills.
