Diffused Lake Aeration

Diffused lake aeration - a range of diffused lake aerators from Heathland Group Norfolk.

Supplying & Installing Diffused Lake Aerators

Heathland Group can provide a variety of diffused air aerators for lakes. We offer diffused lake aeration from both tube or disc-style diffuser membranes, so we have aerators to suit everyone. Disc style diffuser membranes entrain water from the top of the membrane up through the water column. Tube style diffuser membranes entrain water from 360° around the tube. This allows them to reach deeper water which helps aerate the lake bed and promote sediment and silt digestion.

What are the benefits of diffused lake aeration systems?

During the summer most lakes tend to suffer from thermal stratification, a process by which the lake water develops layers. On the bottom of the lake, you’ll have cooler, oxygen-depleted water. This is separated from the warmer oxygen-rich water on the surface of the lake by a layer called the thermocline. The differences in water density at the thermocline mean that the top layer and the bottom layer are prevented from mixing. This causes harmful gasses to become trapped and oxygen levels to deplete.

Incorporating diffused lake aeration

When you incorporate diffused lake aeration from the lake bed, the trapped toxic gasses are pushed through the thermocline. They are then able to escape, helping to provide a balanced habitat in your lake. The aeration also creates aerobic conditions near the lake bed, where microbial processes can naturally break down nutrients that might otherwise be used in the production of noxious aquatic weeds and algae. During this process, the diffused aeration also circulates the entire water body. It does this by pushing the lower water column to the surface, as this process takes place surface water is drawn down.

Heathland Group’s diffused air aeration systems pump air through the diffuser membranes. This air is then able to make its way to the lake’s surface in the form of millions of tiny bubbles. As these bubbles travel upward through the layers of thermal stratification they entrain water with them. This water is carried to the surface where it becomes naturally oxygenated, thus aerating your lake.

Thermal Stratification and aeration for lakes and ponds - Diffused lake aeration from Heathland Fountains and Aerators, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, UK

The key features of diffused lake aeration;

  • Breaks up thermal stratification throughout the water column. This allows the entire water column to be oxygenated and eliminates highs and lows in both temperature and oxygen levels.
  • Increases the breakdown of aquatic waste by providing a habitat beneficial for aerobic bacteria to flourish.
  • When operated continuously in freezing climates, these aerators will keep areas in the ice open and moving. This allows toxic gases to escape and maintains the oxygen level in the water.
  • Winter operation will keep areas of frozen lakes open. This allows birds and other wildlife to gain the much-needed water they need during freezing conditions.
  • Prevents fish kills. This is normally seen in freezing conditions due to depleted oxygen levels or gas eruptions which are linked to rotting vegetation.
