If your lake features an island or if your lake is an acre but is long rather than circular or is struggling with a particular problem such as runoffs from local fields, high fish stocks, or high number of waterfowl, 1 aerator per acre is simply not enough to effectively deliver high oxygen levels fighting off thermal stratification, stagnation or algae.
“You need 1 diffuser per acre.”
That is not always correct.
The rule of 1 diffuser per acre is a generic measurement that only takes into account water displacement. This on its own often isn’t a true representation of the lake’s (or any other body of water’s) requirement. Not only do you have to consider the size of the lake but also the accompanying problems.
Depth makes a difference in the number of diffusers needed. How deep is your lake? The shallower the water the more diffusers you need, and vice-versa the deeper the water the less. When the lake is shallower the bubbles from the disc diffuser that sits at the bottom of the lakebed take a shorter time to travel to the surface. This means that less surrounding area is aerated than when a diffused aerator is placed in a deeper water where the bubbles take a longer time to travel to the surface.
Location is also important. For example, if the lake is surrounded by trees and blocked off from airflow it makes the water stagnant. 1 aerator won’t be enough to cope in this situation.
Since every body of water is unique, there are many more factors to consider when thinking about how many aerators you need to purchase. This is also why cheaper off-the-shelf aeration systems with the blanket recommendation of 1 diffuser per acre often will not effectively aerate your body of water.
Unfortunately, we see this often with clients asking us for professional consultancy after installing the wrong number of aerators. We recommend taking all the above into consideration. It is better to discuss the issues with your lake in depth before purchasing a water aeration system so that you have the correct number of diffusers to deal with the problems at hand. Usually, 1 diffuser per acre might therefore not be enough.
