Sin embargo, el posicionamiento correcto es clave para garantizar una funcionalidad completa. Para que las fotocélulas funcionen de manera eficiente, no deben colocarse en áreas sombreadas. La posición ideal para cualquier fotocélula sería estar orientada al norte, lejos de la luz solar directa y no bajo un techo. Al caer la noche, la fotocélula no debe estar orientada hacia ninguna fuente de luz artificial, ya que esto engañaría a la fotocélula y haría que el componente apagara la lámpara.
En un proyecto reciente, un cliente colocó incorrectamente la fotocélula de iluminación de la fuente por sí mismo. La posición sombreada que seleccionó el cliente hizo que la fotocélula registrara la luz nocturna todo el tiempo. Su función de iluminación se activaba durante el día, pero no por la noche cuando era necesario.
