يظل التقسيم الطبقي الشتوي في مكانه لأن الغطاء الجليدي يمنع الرياح من خلط الماء. لذا فإن التهوية السطحية من نافورة الشتاء تحافظ على حركة مياه الشتاء. هذا يمنع التقسيم الطبقي الشتوي وبالتالي يحافظ على توازن البركة أو البحيرة بيئيًا.
