I sistemi di aerazione diffusa sono un ottimo modo per mantenere il laghetto, il lago, la pesca o il bacino idrico nelle migliori condizioni.
Sono installati sistemi di aerazione ad aria diffusa per prevenire la stratificazione termica. Durante i periodi più caldi i corpi idrici tendono a soffrire di stratificazione termica, che si verifica quando l'acqua del laghetto, del lago o del bacino idrico si divide in strati. Lo strato superiore conterrà acqua più calda e ricca di ossigeno, mentre lo strato inferiore sarà composto da acqua più fredda e carente di ossigeno. Questi due strati sono separati e questo fenomeno è noto come termoclino. Il motivo per cui gli strati superiore e inferiore non si mescolano è a causa delle differenze di densità all'interno del termoclino.
Sistemi di aerazione diffusa agiscono pompando aria attraverso le membrane sotto forma di milioni di minuscole bolle. Quando queste bolle raggiungono la superficie dell'acqua attraverso gli strati di stratificazione termica, trasportano (trasportano) acqua più fredda e carente di ossigeno dallo strato inferiore. L'acqua diventa quindi ossigenata naturalmente quando raggiunge la superficie.
Dalla circolazione e dall'aerazione dei livelli inferiori, possono essere rilasciati gas tossici che normalmente sarebbero intrappolati nello strato inferiore. Viene quindi mantenuto un habitat equilibrato per la vita acquatica. Questo processo crea condizioni aerobiche salutari ai livelli inferiori dello stagno o del lago. È qui che i processi microbici possono scomporre naturalmente i nutrienti che altrimenti produrrebbero alghe e alghe acquatiche nocive. Le erbacce e le alghe acquatiche nocive intasano il lago o il bacino idrico e riducono notevolmente la qualità dell'acqua.
Oltre a creare un equilibrio ecologico all'interno del laghetto o del lago, l'uso di un sistema di aerazione diffusa durante l'inverno manterrà i corpi idrici aperti durante i mesi gelidi per uccelli e altri animali selvatici.
